Jae K Kim
Jae K Kim is an architect, researcher, and educator whose work explores the reimagining of East Asian timber architecture. He began the research that became Timbercraft from a concern that the structural intelligence and craftsmanship embedded in traditional timber buildings were increasingly being overlooked as architecture became more standardized and construction knowledge more fragmented.
For more than ten years, Kim studied historic timber buildings across China, Japan, and Korea, reconstructing them through field research, three-dimensional models, analytical drawings, and comparative studies. This long process became Timbercraft: Lost Tectonics from East Asia (nai010 Publishers, 2026), a book that seeks not simply to document tradition, but to recover its underlying principles and explore how they might inform new possibilities for contemporary architecture.
His research is closely connected to his design practice. As founder of JK-AR, Kim has realized projects including House of Three Trees (2019), Pavilion of Floating Lights (2022), and House for Rejuvenation (2025), each exploring new relationships between timber, structure, joinery, and space. He also leads CoDe Lab at Hanyang University, where his research and teaching investigate digital craftsmanship and the intersection of inherited building knowledge with contemporary design technologies.
김재경
건축가이자 연구자, 교육자인 김재경은 ‘동아시아 목조건축의 창신(創新)’을 주제로 전통 목조건축의 지혜를 오늘날의 건축으로 새롭게 이어가는 작업을 지속하고 있다. 그는 건축의 현대화로 야기된 보편성의 시대에서 전통 목조건축에 축적된 구조적 지혜와 장인정신이 점차 잊히고 있다는 문제의식에서 Timbercraft의 연구를 시작하였다.
지난 10여 년 동안 한중일의 전통 목조건축을 직접 조사하고, 3차원 모델과 분석 도면을 통해 전통건축을 분석하며 지역과 시대에 따른 구조와 결구의 원리를 비교 분석해왔다. 이러한 오랜 연구를 드로잉으로 표현하여 Timbercraft: Lost Tectonics from East Asia (nai010 Publishers, 2026)를 출간하였다. 이 책은 전통 목조건축을 기록하는 데 그치지 않고, 그 안에 내재된 구축의 원리를 다시 발견하고 이를 현대 건축의 새로운 가능성으로 연결하고자 한다.
이러한 연구는 그의 건축 실무와도 긴밀하게 연결되어 있다. 김재경은 JK-AR를 이끌며 세 그루 집 (2019), 빛의 루 (2022), 치유의 집 (2025) 등을 설계하였으며, 목재와 구조, 결구, 공간의 새로운 관계를 탐구해왔다. 또한 한양대학교 건축학부 교수로 CoDe Lab을 이끌며 디지털 장인정신(Digital Craftsmanship)을 중심으로 전통의 구축 지식과 현대 설계 기술의 접점을 연구하고 교육하고 있다.
